In the arid town of Lokichoggio in Turkana in north-western Kenya, a group of 20 women gather to reflect on their monthly contribution in their Chama, a Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) known as Yeriko VSLA Women Group. In the meeting, the group will collect the weekly saving from each member, issue loans to those who need them and collect repayments for ongoing loan repayments.
In a community long shaped by patriarchal traditions, this initiative represents a new hope for women who were historically confined to household chores and financial dependency on their husbands. Through the Yeriko VSLA, these women are now empowered to contribute to their families’ well-being, from raising children to addressing pressing financial needs.
This particular VSLA group has a mantra “Patience is key in saving”. It was formed in July, 2024 through guidance and capacity building by Danchurch Aid Kenya’s European Union funded SPREAD Project.
Breaking Barriers and Building Dreams
When DCA first introduced the idea, the women received it with joy, because with it presented new hope and a new journey for them. It was the first time many saw an opportunity to support their families beyond their traditional roles.
With a vision of financial independence, the group of 20 women and 2 men began saving in October 2024. In the group, each member contributes between 200 Kenya shilling (USD 1.5) and 1,000 shilling (USD 7.75) weekly, alongside a social fund contribution of 50 shilling (USD 0.4). This fund provides a safety net for emergencies such as medical bills or funerals, reflecting the group’s commitment to mutual support.
A Journey of Empowerment

In just five weeks, the group saved 17,600 shilling (USD 135), which they loaned out to members at a 10% interest rate. The loans have enabled members to expand small businesses like firewood sales, charcoal burning, laundry services, and retail shops. These ventures are not only generating income but also building the confidence of the members as they realize their potential to manage finances and invest in their futures.
Challenging Norms
In a bold move, the group welcomed two men into their savings initiative. Traditionally, men in Turkana culture are not involved in such activities. The inclusion of men in Yeriko serves as an example to the community, promoting the principles of saving and financial responsibility.
Education and Future Aspirations

The group’s impact extends beyond financial independence. Many members, particularly older women, are determined to ensure their daughters receive the education they were denied.
Among the members is Sylvia Akiru, a 22-year-old who recently cleared her secondary school education. “Joining Yeriko has given me a sense of purpose,” Sylvia explains.
Determined to avoid the pitfalls many youth face, such as substance abuse, petty crimes and early pregnancies, she is saving to settle her school fee debts and pursue a certificate course in child protection. Her goal is to inspire other young people to save and plan for brighter futures.
Looking ahead, Yeriko’s members dream of investing in land and property to generate rental income and purchasing a vehicle for business purposes. Their collective vision is to achieve financial security and independence, moving beyond immediate survival to long-term prosperity.

“We want to create something that will last, so that our children continue to become beneficiaries of this transformative group,” Selina Akoel, Yeriko VSLA Secretary
A Safety Net for All
The group’s social fund exemplifies their commitment to solidarity. Members support one another during critical moments, providing financial assistance for medical emergencies, childbirth, and funerals. In the event of a member’s death, the group even clears outstanding loans, ensuring no family is burdened by debt.
A New Dawn for Lokichoggio
With the support of the SPREAD project, these women have not only transformed their own lives but also inspired their community. Their determination to break free from traditional limitations and build a better future is a powerful testament to the impact of collaboration and resilience.
